Let's hope so, nothing worse than someone without conviction. It's nearly as bad as someone without an opinion.

Has Alphonse said what he wants to do?

I've heard some rumblings that we're gonna try to loan him for another season. Makes sense, as we can use money to strengthen elsewhere.

He fits in, we know he's good and at 11 million that's one squad issue sorted

Re: Alphonse Areola
We rarely have world cup winners in our ranks, so get him in.

Seems (to me, anyway) that he's better than Johnstone who we've been heavily linked to, along with Man Utd and Spurs.

£11m is nothing in today's game. Just got to hope he doesn't think we'd offer PSG wages.

southbankbornnbred 9:46 Sat Apr 16
Re: Alphonse Areola
I think he's earned a permanent deal, providing he's sensible about his wages - and PSG are sensible about the fee.

Totally get what some are saying about crosses. But, don't forget, many international keepers improve on crosses the more time they spend in England. Fabianski being one of them: Arsenal fans used to refer to him as 'Flappy-Handski'. Quite aside from that being a shit nickname only middle-class north Londoners would come up with, it did allude to him being a bit weak on crosses and flapping at them when he first arrived.

Depending on which league you come from, many keepers aren't as used to the volume of crosses when they arrive in England.

Seems a bit odd that we're now in mid-April (another fucking year going in a blink) and there hasn't been any speculation/quotes, or sweet fuck all if he is staying or not? Something has to come out fairly soon one would think.

Re: Alphonse Areola
He’s decent enough but you don’t just throw silly money at him. If he wants to stay then he’ll do it for a wage that fits the club. He won’t exactly be struggling to go to Harvester at the end of each month!

Giving him whatever he demands could cause unnecessary shit elsewhere. That’s the opposite of what we’re trying to do right now.

However, he can have a one-off bonus payment for that huge save against Sevilla!

Re: Alphonse Areola
Keep him and pay him, I don’t care what he earns, our wage structure has to change dramatically if we win Europa and get CL - the sort of players we might be able to attract are going to want proper money.

Alphonse is a proper keeper and should be a medium, long term no 1 for us.

Re: Alphonse Areola
Sign him up.
Hasn't done too much wrong, and it's not like there's that many options out there is it?
Plus THAT save against Seville...
Remember tihs run we're going on in Europe? Who's been in goal?
Like the bloke.

Re: Alphonse Areola
I'd like to see us sign him but as has already been said wages are a consideration. If he wants a massive salary and isn't going to be our number one keeper then it's probably not the best deal when we will have salary constraints and need to get players in several other areas as well as tie down some existing players. Player salaries are just stupid.

I think this may depend on what sort of deal can be done with Fabianski. For me he is still a quality keeper at this level, his reactions have still looked good and I think he commands his area and distributes the ball better. The chances of injury get higher as you age and we need a top quality backup but you wouldn't blow 100k a week or more on one.

If we make it to a final then Areola definitely deserves to keep his place and get a medal as he earns his place and been a part of our success.

My bet is on him going back to Fulham.

Has to be signed permanently . And he genuinely seems to love it here .

Re: Alphonse Areola
Pretty sure Moyes sees Fab as his number 1 and he has been good this season. I too would like the see the swap happen next year and have Areola for number 1 for a good number of years.

His wages are high though so I’m expecting him to go back to PSG and us get Pope or Johnstone in the summer for less money to be back up for 1 year with promise of all cup games and number 1 jersey year after.

If we got Champions league we might be tempted to keep Alfonso

Kaiser Zoso 6:19 Fri Apr 15
Re: Alphonse Areola
He’s better than Fabianski and ought to be first choice already. Having said that, Fabianski has been decent all season and hasn’t really had a bad enough spell that he should be dropped. But Areola ought to take over between the sticks, goal tending, wear the no 1 jersey, don the gloves, and so on, blueyedmentalcase will spot any I’ve missed

ludo21 5:24 Fri Apr 15
Re: Alphonse Areola
I'd take Areola as no. 1 next season and give Fabianski the Cups gig... he deserves a run in Europe.

We've been very lucky with no goalkeeping injuries, may not be so lucky next and need two decent keepers. We've almost certainly got the best goalkeeping backup in PL this season.

Stubbo 5:18 Fri Apr 15
Re: Alphonse Areola
Whether this year or next, Fabianski is going to need replacing. 11m for a top drawer keeper is a total steal....only way I wouldn't make this guy perm is of we could pick up Pope for 15m or less when Burnley drop through the trapdoor.

Nagel 11:04 Fri Apr 15
Re: Alphonse Areola
We do have an option to buy - at £11m. Wages might be a stumbling block as he's on £100k pw at PSG I think.

Apart from flapping at crosses I've not been impressed with his distribution, which I was hoping would be better than Fab's. Seeing as our CBs aren't much cop at playing out from the back we need a keeper who can distribute it well, especially for counter attacks.
